Surface Treatment and Coating Technology for Medical-Grade LSR Silicone

Medical-grade LSR silicone is widely used in implantable devices, in vitro diagnostic equipment, and wound care products. However, pure LSR surfaces exhibit hydrophobicity, protein adsorption, and bacterial adhesion issues. Surface treatment and coating technologies are essential to improve biointerface performance.

I. LSR Surface Characteristics and Modification Needs

1. Original Surface Features

• Low surface energy (20-24 mN/m), strongly hydrophobic
• Water contact angle 105-115°, unfavorable for cell adhesion and hydrophilic drug release
• Siloxane migration: low-molecular-weight siloxane migrates to surface, affecting coating adhesion
• Non-specific protein adsorption, triggering inflammatory response or thrombosis

2. Modification Objectives

• Increase surface hydrophilicity (water contact angle < 60°)
• Reduce protein and bacterial adhesion
• Enhance coating adhesion
• Impart special functions: antimicrobial, anticoagulant

II. Surface Pretreatment Technologies

1. Plasma Treatment

• Oxygen plasma: introduces hydroxyl, carboxyl, and other polar groups on surface
• Treatment conditions: power 50-200W, duration 30-120 seconds
• Water contact angle can be reduced to 30-50°
• Limitation: effect decays over time (aging effect), subsequent coating must be applied within 24 hours

2. UV/Ozone Treatment

• 185nm and 254nm UV generates ozone to oxidize surface
• Treatment time: 5-30 minutes
• Modification depth shallow (5-10nm), suitable for thin coating pretreatment

3. Chemical Etching

• Sulfuric acid/hydrogen peroxide (piranha solution) treatment
• Removes surface low-molecular-weight siloxane, increases surface roughness

1. Hydrophilic Coatings

• PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) coating: reduces protein adsorption, water contact angle < 30°
• PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone) coating: excellent hydrophilicity, good lubrication

• Curing: UV cure or thermal cure

• RGD peptide coating: promotes endothelial cell adhesion and growth
